York Victorian Town Plan - Heritage Cartographers

York 1849

Size 500mm x 540mm

Uncoloured size 600mm x 648mm

The map shows York just breaking out of its medieval walled restrictions showing the new institutions of workhouse, asylum, barracks and hospital together with early terraced housing, springing up in the old field system around the town. Interestingly, the original railway station was built within the walls, although the extensive engine sheds had to be without. Clearly evident is the importance of York, even at that early time of development, to the railway network of the country, with its extensive sidings and workshops.
